Monas not available for Indonesia’s first Formula E race: State Secretariat

first_imgThe State Secretariat has turned down a proposal to use the National Monument (Monas) complex for Indonesia’s first Formula E electric car race, which is to be held in June in Jakarta.Monas is under the supervision of the Medan Merdeka Area Development Steering Committee, which is helmed by State Secretary Pratikno.“The steering committee does not approve the plan for using Monas,” State Secretariat secretary Setya Utama told the press on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.The rejection was based on various reasons, including that Monas is a heritage site, he added.Read also: Is it worth the money? Jakarta walks alone to 2020 Formula E raceSetya said the monument is a historical and cultural landmark for Indonesia and that any heavy modification might pose a risk to its well-being.“[The race] needs a significant modification [of the site], including to put in a certain type of asphalt,” he added.Setya said the committee would soon issue a formal rejection letter to the Jakarta administration.”Regulation mentions clearly which events that Monas can host,” he said. The Jakarta ePrix is scheduled to take place on June 6, joining Seoul in South Korea and London in England. A contract signed in August 2019 says that Jakarta would host the race for five consecutive years.Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan announced the five-year deal in September 2019, saying the event would benefit the capital as it would stimulate infrastructure development.Jakarta’s Formula E hosting has met challenges, apart from the unavailability of Monas.Earlier this year a petition to cancel the Jakarta Formula E was made after the New Year’s Day flooding.Irawan Endro Prasetyo started the petition on Change.org, alleging the Jakarta administration had cut the city’s flood management budget for the sake of hosting the race. Read also: After floods, calls mount to cancel Formula E race in JakartaThe petition, which was addressed to the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Jakarta City Council Speaker Prasetio Edi Marsudi and Anies, says: “We need all available resources to help people and rebuild our city, not to waste them on one event that ridicules the citizens’ sufferings. “Please consider moving this event to another city that is more prepared to host it.” Anies, however, denied the allegation about the budget being cut to fund the race. The Jakarta ePrix is an annual race for the single-seater, electrically powered Formula E championship. It is to be the first FIA-sanctioned race in the country since the A1 GP in 2006. (gis)Topics :last_img read more

Heaton signs new Burnley deal

first_img Press Association “It was certainly the ambition when I signed here only 12 months ago and obviously it was a fantastic season,” he told Clarets Player. “It’s great to be a part of it. I feel that, personally, I have got more to come and I’m really excited to show that here. “We will set our stall out ambitious again and the aim is to stay in the Premier League and then kick on from there. “I think I’m the eternal optimist but you never know what you can achieve and I think I’ve been in the game long enough to know what is around the corner if you do things properly. “If you do that as individuals and a collective then you give yourself a great chance and that will certainly be the motto from me again. “People will write us off but we’ll just try and go about our business the way we did last year and hopefully that will stand us in good stead.” The 28-year-old kept 19 clean sheets during the Clarets’ promotion from the Sky Bet Championship and had only 12 months left on his existing deal, although there was an option for a further year extension. Heaton is now looking forward to playing in the top flight, having made a prediction Burnley would reach the Premier League when he arrived last summer from Bristol City. center_img Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new three-year contract at Turf Moor. last_img read more

Amazon Warriors begin training camp

first_img… Pakistani Babar Azam replaces injured Chris LynnTHE Guyana Amazon Warriors began a seven-day training programme yesterday as part of preparations for the August 4 start of the much-anticipated Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament.Fourteen of the 17 members started the training camp at the Guyana National Stadium under head coach Roger Harper, assistant coach Esaun Crandon, strength and conditioning trainer Clinton Jeremiah along with the Warriors technical support team.Under Harper, the Guyana Amazon Warriors will be looking to win the tournament for the first time. The Warriors have been the most consistent team in the history of CPL cricket, but never managed to win a single title after four years. They reached the final in 2013, 2014 and 2016, and were one of the semifinalists in 2015.Meanwhile, Crandon told media operatives that the camp is more than an acquaintance exercise for the players.Crandon, who is also the Guyana Jaguars head coach, pointed out that the camp, a customary practice for teams preparing for competitions, is a vital one for the local franchise.Pakistani Babar Azam has replaced Chris LynnHe further related that they will look to pack a heavy workload in the next week with the aim of getting to peak condition for the fifth edition of the League.“Preparation is always important. We have a week together so we will try and put in as much as we could together. We have an assessment in the morning (today) so there we will have a look with the guys and see where they are at present,” Crandon said.Meanwhile, it was confirmed from the Warriors management unit that Pakistani batsman Babar Azam has replaced the injured Australia middle-order batsman Chris Lynn.Azam is an exciting young batsman who has come up through the ranks of junior cricket in Pakistan and is already touted as one of the best young batsmen.Azam first made a mark when he captained the Pakistan team at the Under-19 World Cup of 2012, where he ended up as the highest run-getter for his side scoring 287 runs from six games. He is expected here on tomorrow.Further, Pakistani all-rounder Sohail Tanvir, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill, will arrive today. This year the Warriors have retained Tanvir, Guptill, Lynn (out injured), Trinidad and Tobago all-rounder Rayad Emrit, Trinidad and Tobago batsman Jason Mohammed, Guyanese trio of Veerasammy Permaul, Assad Fudadin and Steven Jacobs and Trinidad and Tobago wicketkeeper/batsman Steven Katwaroo. They have raked in six newcomers in their squad, Jamaican wicket-keeper/batsman Chadwick Walton, Afghanistan all-rounder Rashid Khan, ICC Americas opener Steven Taylor, along with Barbados all-rounder Roshon Primus and the Guyanese pair, batsman Gajanand Singh and fast bowler Keon Joseph.Joseph was called in as a replacement for the injured Ronsford Beaton in the Guyana Amazon Warriors squad in 2013. However, he did not play a match.Further West Indies Under-19 World Cup Champions player Keemo Paul has been selected as a replacement for Shimron Hetmyer.Hetmyer, who was initially selected by the Guyana Amazon Warriors as the West Indies Youth Player will be on West Indies Senior Team duties and as such Paul has been chosen as his replacement. The squad will depart for Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 2. During the Florida leg, the Warriors will play St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in two games before returning to the Caribbean.Guyana home games are billed for August 17, 19, 20 and 22 at the Guyana National Stadium. The host team (Guyana Amazon Warriors) take on the Jamaica Tallawahs on August 17 from 20:00hrs; Trinbago Knight Riders on August 19 from 12:00hrs; Barbados Tridents on August 20 from 18:00hrs and St Lucia Stars on August 22 from 18:00hrs.last_img read more

Schelling: Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff beyond terrible

first_imgIt was yet another perfect example of the Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff’s inability to keep its team in games.Opening Day starter Jeff Suppan started the night by allowing four runs on nine hits in just 4 1/3 innings, but the Brewers’ offense mounted a five-run ninth inning comeback to send the game against the Cincinnati Reds into extra innings, tied at six runs apiece.Unfortunately, relief pitcher Todd Coffey — who is second on the team behind Trevor Hoffman in ERA — surrendered a pair of 13th inning home runs, eventually leading to an 8-6 Reds victory on Aug. 24, 2009.The worst thing is no one honestly could have been surprised by the outcome. While the Brewers boast two of the league’s best offensive talents in Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder and an elite closer in Trevor Hoffman, the pitching staff as a whole has been absolutely terrible.Actually, terrible would be a compliment based on their numbers.Starters David Bush, Manny Parra and Jeff Suppan have struggled tremendously, with each possessing an ERA of 5.00 or higher. Carlos Villanueva and Mike Burns, who each have started at least five games, are both above a 6.00 ERA.Braden Looper, who has been the only consistent starter for Milwaukee behind Yovani Gallardo, is not much better with an ERA of nearly five runs. Fortunately Gallardo, the team’s de facto ace, has impressed with an ERA around 3.50 in just his second full season.Simply put, the Brewers have been lucky to win as many games as they have with the way they have pitched this season. If not for Braun and Fielder, they may find themselves much farther out of the picture in the National League Central (think Washington Nationals bad).Out of 16 NL teams, the Brewers rank 15th or lower in six pitching categories. Milwaukee pitchers have allowed just over 20 more home runs than any other team in the league, which is also good for the most home runs allowed per nine innings pitched. And while the team’s ERA is not quite Washington’s more than five per nine innings, it is significantly larger (0.25) than the league’s next worst team, the San Diego Padres. The Brewers were the second team this season to allow 600 earned runs, and they allow nearly 1 1/2 hits or walks per inning pitched. This is reflected in the fact only three teams (Washington, Houston and Arizona) have allowed more hits and only three (New York, Washington and San Diego) have surrendered more walks. So how does all of this compare to the Brewers’ 2008 numbers?Last season, Milwaukee ranked among the top four in nearly every pitching category, including ERA, shut outs, runs per game, hits, walks and WHIP.At 3.87, the Brewers boasted the league’s second best ERA and led the league with 12 complete games and six shut outs — all of which were thrown by Ben Sheets or CC Sabathia.Remember them?Sheets and Sabathia, who combined for a 24-11 record and 2.55 ERA, carried the Brewers to last season’s NL Wild Card berth. Sure, Braun and Fielder may have hit the clutch late season home runs, but there is no doubt Sheets and Sabathia made the true difference.Without them, the Brewers have allowed one more earned run per game despite already throwing more shut outs this season (7) than all of last season (6).With Sheets and Sabathia averaging nearly seven innings per start last season, the Milwaukee starting rotation combined to pitch more than 6 1/3 innings per start in 2008. This year, however, Gallardo is the only Brewers starter to average more than six innings per start while the staff as a whole averages 1/2 inning less per start in 2009 than in 2008.As a result, the Brewers’ bullpen has been overworked to the extent that manager Ken Macha has been forced to use pitchers like R.J. Swindle (16.20 ERA in 6.2 innings) and Jorge Julio (7.79 ERA in 17.1 innings). In 2008, only Derrick Turnbow (15.63 ERA in 6.1 innings) finished with an ERA of greater than nine runs. With such a terrible pitching staff, you would think the Brewers’ front office would go out and acquire significant improvements to both the starting rotation and the bullpen.Instead, they added Claudio Vargas (who the Brewers had released previously) and Dave Weathers (who is 39 years old). The two have been serviceable, but have had little to no impact. So goes the story of the 2009 Milwaukee Brewers. In a season where Braun and Fielder (and Weeks) showed they were ready to join the league’s elite, the Brew Crew just have not found consistency on the mound.Let’s hope they pitch better in September, even if their playoff hopes are gone.Jordan is a senior majoring in journalism and political science. Whats in Future Homebuyers Minds

first_img First American Homeownership Progress Index HOUSING mortgage 2017-08-17 Nicole Casperson August 17, 2017 565 Views Share What’s in Future Homebuyers’ Minds?center_img Although society continues to progress towards non-traditional lifestyle changes, homeownership remains an important component of the American Dream. However, the homeownership rate continues to decline. So what’s in future homebuyers’ mind that is driving this homeownership rate to decline further? To answer this question, First American recently released its Homeownership Progress Index (HPRI) that looks into societal factors that influence homeownership rates. Changing demographic and economic factors either increase or decrease someone’s potential to be a homeowner. For example, increasing marital rates, household size, educational attainment, income, and improving economic conditions all increase potential demands for homeownership.Mark Fleming, Chief Economist at First American said that even as lifestyle factors such as delayed marriage, family formation, and higher education levels continue, the HPRI declined only moderately from 2015 to 2016 by 0.4 percent. While this decrease is not riveting, it means that the prospect for future homeownership demand looks hopeful. Nationally the decline is modest, but homeownership rates varied significantly at the market level.”Small changes in potential homeownership demand hide a large amount of variation in markets across the country,” Fleming said. “The underlying factors that the HPRI accounts for can vary substantially by region of the country and market. Regions or markets with stronger local economies and that can attract increasingly educated millennial households will have stronger homeownership demand in the future.”For example, the report noted that the difference between San Jose, California, the market with the biggest gain in potential homeownership demand, and Birmingham, Alabama, the market with the biggest decline in potential homeownership demand, revealed a 9 percent difference between the two markets.Meanwhile, half of the top 10 markets for year-over-year growth in potential homeownership demand are in either California or Texas, while eight of the bottom 10 markets are on the East Coast or in the Midwest, according to the Index. To view First American’s Homeownership Progress Index, click here. in Daily Dose, Featured, Newslast_img read more
