Panasonic intros rugged 7 and 10inch BizPad Android tablets

first_imgAll those new low-cost, slim, sexy Android tablets we’ve seen lately are great and all, but how will they hold up on the job site? They’re all a bit too delicate to fend off environmental attackers like dust and water. Fortunately, several OEMs are building tough, manly Android tablets that can stand up to abuse — and Panasonic has just unveiled a new pair of contenders.Meet the BizPad JT-580VT and 581VT, ruggedized 7 and 10-inch (respectively) Android tablets. They’re powered by a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor paired with 1GB of RAM and feature 16GB of internal storage, NFC support, user-replaceable batteries, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, GPS, and an infrared emitter. The 7-inch 580VT offers a 5 megapixel front facing camera while the 581 packs a 1.3 megapixel rear camera for video conferencing. Apart from the obvious difference in diagonal measurements, the 580’s touchscreen pushes 1024×768 pixels compared to the 581 at 1280×800. Both are fairly light, at 400 grams and 700 grams respectively. Those are fairly bog-standard specs for Android tablets nowadays, but it’s the rugged design that’s the star here. Both the 580 and 581 are dust-proof and water-proof, and they can handle significant drops — of up to 120CM for the 7-incher and 80CM for its 10-inch sibling. These aren’t Panasonic’s first hard-nosed Android tablets, of course. They’ll join the company’s first ToughBook slate built with Android under the hood, which we showed you back in June. Panasonic has a long pedigree when it comes to ruggedized portable devices, and these new Android slates are sure to get plenty of looks from demanding IT administrators who need resilient tablets to hand out to their users.Unfortunately, this duo is only slated for sale in Japan right now, where they’ll hit the streets in January 2012.More at TechCrunch and Panasoniclast_img read more
