Women’s Soccer Set for Two MVC Road Matches this Week

This week, Drake is vying to get six more points to build upon its lead in the standings. Following this week, the Bulldogs close the regular season on Oct. 26 when Loyola visits Cownie. The Ramblers are currently tied with UNI for second place in the standings. First kick against Loyola is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the finale will be broadcast on The Valley on ESPN3. The Bulldogs earned a pair of wins last week. Drake started the week with a 2-1 home victory over in-state rival UNI on Wednesday as sophomore Cassie Rohan (Palatine, Ill.) and redshirt senior Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) each scored one goal. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday at the Cownie Soccer Complex but was pushed back due to heavy rains and an unplayable field. The Bulldogs’ win was the first over the Panthers since the 2011 season, and it snapped a four-year run of the teams battling to four consecutive draws. Drake followed its in-state victory with a 4-1 comeback road win at Evansville on Saturday. The Purple Aces scored the match’s first goal midway through the first half, but the Bulldogs got the equalizer from senior Hannah Wilder (Wheatfield, Ind.) with less than one minute before halftime. In the second half, it was all Drake as senior Rachel Wanninger (Johnston, Iowa) scored two goals and freshman Hannah Bormann (Amana, Iowa) added one goal.Bormann and senior defender Ali Smith (Lenexa, Kan.) were recogonized by the MVC office on Monday for their play last week. Bormann was named the MVC Newcomer of the Week for a league-high third time this season while Smith was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Bormann is tied is tied for the team lead in assists with four and tied for second on the team in goals with three. Smith started and played every minute in each of Drake’s wins over UNI and Evansville. She leads the team in minutes played with 1,349 and has helped the Bulldogs record five shutouts. The Lenexa, Kan. native is tied for the team lead in assists with four and scored her first career goal earlier this season.  SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Drake University women’s soccer team is set to play two Missouri Valley Conference road matches this week.
