La Habra hopes CIF crown fits

first_imgLa Habra recovered to finish second in league and has rolled through four playoff games to reach today’s CIF-Southern Section Division III championship game at Warren High in Downey. Game time is 10 a.m. The Highlanders (27-5-1) will face Saddleback (16-7-5), the No. 3 entry from the Golden West League that has won five playoff games, beginning with a 2-0 win over Norco in a wild-card game. “I think when we won our first playoff game (2-1 over Arcadia) over a very good team, I think our players really realized we could do this (reach the finals),” Aanderud said. “Overall, we’ve been pretty consistent with our play. Everyone has been contributing.” The Highlanders’ offensive-oriented machine is led by forwards Edgar Bran (36 goals, 17 assists) and Greg Francis (35 goals, 16 assists). “Both are (6-foot-1), real fast and great athletes,” Aanderud said. “They make it difficult for defenses to cover us, but when the defense concentrates too much on them, we have others who step up.” Two of those players are sophomores Jacob Baron (eight goals) and Jonathan Prieto (five goals), along with junior Bryan Aanderud (four goals, 11 assists). The defense is headed by junior goalkeeper Kyle Fowler, who has recorded 72 saves, including 14 in three playoff games. You’re all set! “I think the players were down a little after that loss, especially when I think we outplayed them and lost 1-0 on a penalty kick in overtime,” coach Steve Aanderud said. To make matters worse, Aanderud considered the violation a questionable call, but he would only say, “That’s the way the game goes sometimes.” center_img It was a shock to La Habra High School when it lost its Freeway League opener to Fullerton. After all, the Highlanders’ boys soccer team entered league play with an impressive 16-2-1 record and a well-oiled offense. last_img read more
