Research continues to address Lake Erie woes

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Ohio Sea Grant, on behalf of The Ohio State University, The University of Toledo and the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE), has released the third-year research findings update for the statewide Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative (HABRI), which seeks solutions for harmful algal blooms in Ohio. The initiative consists of more than 50 science teams working on different critical knowledge gaps identified by front-line state agencies that include the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA), Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), Ohio Department of Health (ODH), and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).The third-year report reveals that the state of Ohio continues to benefit from the initiative:Early warning systems and forecasts of bloom size and location are giving water treatment plants a high-resolution picture of what could be affecting the drinking water they draw from Lake Erie.Researchers are working directly with water treatment plant operators to provide practical guidance about producing safe drinking water for cities and towns dealing with algal toxins.OEPA modified its permit procedure to better safeguard Ohioans when HABRI projects showed that crops might take in microcystins from water treatment residuals used on farm fields. New HABRI research is now helping OEPA refine the methods they use to analyze these byproducts of water treatment and better assess exposure risk.OEPA sought out HABRI researchers to help develop a Lake Erie open water impairment listing policy and HABRI projects have helped collect data critical for refinement of this indicator. OEPA listed the open waters of the western Lake Erie basin as impaired based on NOAA data and have plans to update it based on HABRI researchers’ recommendations.ODNR has changed the way that information is collected on algal toxin concentrations in sportfish fillets, sampling more frequently during the harmful algal bloom season and from a wider range of Lake Erie locations to better understand how harmful algal blooms affect sportfish.HABRI has driven information sharing and priority setting between universities and agencies, positioning Ohio to better prevent and manage future crises through ongoing collaborations.“Having the collaboration with our sister agencies to coordinate research priorities and funding is critically important,” said Craig Butler, director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. “Likewise, having, through HABRI, a consortium of university experts to take our priorities and quickly do critical, practical research, with conclusions that we can immediately use to inform policy and the public, is invaluable.”HABRI is funded by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, with $7.5 million made available for four rounds of research funding (before matching funds by participating universities) since 2015. Ohio Sea Grant manages the projects, which also include a $500,000 match from OEPA in 2018. Results from the most recent 21 funded projects are expected in 2020.“Colleges and universities around Ohio are making positive contributions to our state each and every day,” said ODHE Chancellor John Carey. “The Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative is a model of collaborative problem-solving that we should strive to replicate wherever possible. I am so encouraged to see how our higher education assets are being used, alongside other state and local partners, to address real issues that are facing Ohioans.”HABRI comprises 54 expert research teams from Bowling Green State University, Central State University, Defiance College, Heidelberg University, Kent State University, Sinclair Community College, the University of Akron, the University of Cincinnati, and consortium leaders The University of Toledo and The Ohio State University.last_img read more

Let There Be Light — on the GU24 base for CFLs and LEDs

first_imgAre we really ready to say goodbye to incandescent light bulbs? The ones that give off 10% light and 90% heat? The ones with the shortest life span? The ones that have the lowest initial price, don’t flicker, are always instant on-instant off, and give off the “right” color and quality of light? Not so fast and not so easy…We have been here before: 2- and 4-pin CFL fixtures! Many of us have been here: wired a project with 2- or 4-pin CFL fixtures so that the lighting STAYED efficient when lamps (bulbs) needed to be replaced, only to hear complaints about the quality of the CFL pin lamps, the lack of wattage flexibility of the pin CFL lamps, the price of the CFL pin lamp replacements; or even worse, hear (at very high decibel levels) that there were no replacement pin lamps even being stocked by local retail.GU24 base lamps are the future of energy-efficient lightingI think we have it right this time: the relatively new GU24 base (see attached images). This new base has a 2-pin base that you simply twist and click to replace the lamp (bulb). It eliminates inappropriate incandescent lamp (bulb) replacement but allows replacement with ANY wattage of CFL OR LED. And the GU24 makes for a shorter base than the standard medium screw base (E26) so no worries over new CFL or LED lamps fitting into tight fixtures. Are Energy Star and industry embracing the new exclusively CFL/LED GU24 base?Yes, they are. As of this writing, the majority of Energy Star fixtures are using the GU24 base and there are a full range of CFLs and a growing number of LED lamps with the GU24 configuration, both in local retail and online. When I checked online, GU24 lamps of all types and wattages were widely available and our local True Value hardware store carries them. (The local Ace hardware store is not yet stocking them, but employees reported a growing interest and special orders for GU24 lamps).Energy Star stated that the new draft of their GU24 product criteria will be out in early September of this year and the GU24 base is becoming more popular with LED lighting manufacturers as well. What should affordable housing providers do about GU24?In states with strict energy codes, you will probably be more and more “pressured” or motivated to consider GU24 — it’s the way to go, at least for new construction. In retrofit, depending on how the building code applies, you may want to go to GU24 as part of going green, moving your homes to GU24-base light fixtures. The slightly higher first cost of a GU24-base CFL will be more than covered by the energy savings and longer life of the CFL compared to any incandescent bulb. And maybe you will want to offer rebate vouchers for GU24 lamps as a way of sharing your commitment to energy-efficient lighting with your clients. What about LEDs and affordable housing?LEDs are really not yet a good fit for affordable housing. While many lighting experts feel that LEDs are the bulb of the future and the LED market share is growing rapidly, LEDs are changing all the time and their first cost is still too high for the affordable housing market. Most importantly, LED performance metrics need to change, to better separate out the LED wheat from the chaff. The new Energy Star product criteria for CFLs do a much better job in this respect, but LED product criteria are just not there yet.last_img read more

Robert Griffin III Dominates Michael VickLess Eagles

Robert Griffin III looked forward to playing opposite the Philadelphia Eagles’ Michael Vick on Sunday. But a concussion kept Philly’s quarterback sidelined. Vick had to be impressed with what he saw in Griffin, though, who played virtually a perfect game in leading the Washington Redskins to a rare easy win, 31-6.Griffin was 14-f0r-15 passing for 200 yards and a career-high four touchdowns for a perfect 158.3 quarterback rating. Griffin also rushed for 84 yards. The newly appointed rookie captain had touchdown passes to of 6 yards to fullback Darrel Young, 49 yards to wide receiver Aldrick Robinson, 61 yards to wideout Santana Moss and 17 yards to tight end Logan Paulsen. The Redskins, coming off their bye week, ended their losing streak at three games and improved their record to 4-6. In the oh-so-forgiving NFC East, that’s good enough for them to be two games behind the idle New York Giants and a game behind the Dallas Cowboys. The Redskins play a Thanksgiving Day game at Dallas. It was the Redskins’ largest margin of victory under their third-year coach, Mike Shanahan. Their most lopsided win under Shanahan previously had been 14 points. The last-place Eagles (3-7) extended to six the longest losing streak of coach Andy Reid’s 16-year tenure in Philadelphia. With Vick concussed, rookie starter Foles did nothing to secure the position. He looked lost most of the time and threw a pair of early interceptions and led the Eagles to only a pair of field goals. Tailback LeSean McCoy lost a fumble in the final seconds of the first half to set up a Redskins a field goal that gave Washington a 17-3 halftime lead.Cornerback DeAngelo Hall and safety Brandon Meriweather had the Redskins’ interceptions, but Meriweather, playing his first game this season, also suffered what the team called a sprained right knee. The Redskins go to Dallas for a Thanksgiving Day match that pits bitter rivals trying to move up the NFC East and earn a playoff spot. read more

Jürgen Klopp predicts a Golden Generation for Liverpool

first_imgGerman manager Jürgen Klopp already spoke about the future that lies ahead for Liverpool, but he revealed more details about this Golden Generation.Ever since the Premier League started for Liverpool FC, the club had only been able to either buy or produce very few good players who could be considered world class but that has changed with Jürgen Klopp’s arrival.Fenway Sports Group had the vision of building a squad for the next two decades that could create a new dynasty that could make all Reds’ supporters proud, in order to achieve this several steps needed to be made very carefully. The first and most important phase was getting the ideal manager for the squad, someone with the talent to spot amazing players from unlikely places at very young ages, and with the sensitive intuition to also bring local players up from the academy. There have been very few managers in football history who have this whole package rolled in one, we can easily say that the best in the business right now is German manager Jürgen Klopp.Since he arrived at Liverpool the chemistry was quite rapid, the fans quickly identified with the German manager’s energy and the players soon knew that this was the perfect man for the job.It has taken Klopp three years to win everyone over at Liverpool and England, today he has the squad at the very top of the Premier League table and with a bright future ahead.”We are really in the middle of the development so that’s just good news for Liverpool.” 🙌Klopp on planning for the future and the present…— Liverpool FC (@LFC) January 18, 2019“These 17, 18 players, plus the really young boys, that’s the squad of the future. It should be like this. It’s investment, the club gave us the opportunity to do it — really nice,” Klopp said via The Mirror.“Keeping all of them together means we would have a better chance of making the next step next season than we had in previous years.”“The age group is good. This season will not finish our development. It doesn’t look like we’ll lose any key player, it looks like the players are here with all they have, enjoying it with the other boys, in the stadium, training ground. Progress is something everyone should expect.”“The club has given us the fantastic opportunity to bring in outstanding players and keep those outstanding players.”“Last year, we felt comfortable and could bring in the boys without losing players in the summer.”“Yes, we lost Emre Can, who was an important player, but we could replace him immediately with Fabinho.”Harry Maguire, Manchester UnitedSolskjaer praises Harry Maguire after Man United’s 1-0 win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled out Harry Maguire for praise after helping Manchester United keep a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over Leicester City.“And the Coutinho transfer saw one world class player leave but gave us the opportunity to sign two world-class players. That is how it is sometimes.”“We always try to do the next step and it looks like we did it, but I only want to talk about this season. It is the most important we ever played — because it is the one we are in.”“But there will come another one and we have to make sure we are ready for that as well,” he concluded.Jurgen Klopp top 5 Liverpool signings.Which one is your favorite, Reds? 👀🔴 #LFC pic.twitter.com/Pnfe7TSBrQ— Anfield HQ (@AnfieldHQ) January 18, 2019Even if the Reds don’t end up winning the Premier League this season, there is a newfound sense of certainty that nobody in the modern football era had ever felt at Liverpool.Klopp made sure that the squad became respected all over Europe again, just like it was in the old days before the European Cup format changed and the Reds ran rampant in every stadium they played.Despite not having won a single title yet, Liverpool has already reached the Europa League final, the Champions League final, and today they can easily say that they are the most feared club in English football. All of this was thanks to Klopp’s vision, his prediction may not materialize as early as this season but there is no doubt that the titles will come sooner rather than later. The key was right there in front of everybody, all Liverpool needed was to keep their key players and start trusting on their own local products in order to get the results they are having today.Jürgen Klopp: “I think of all the contract renewals I have been involved with, this one was done in almost record time. He might be from Glasgow originally, but everything about him screams Liverpool.” pic.twitter.com/hGVmxRBpgj— “YNWA” LFC Story (@LFCHistoryShow) January 17, 2019How long will it take Liverpool to win their first major trophy under Jürgen Klopp? Battle Over Online Privacy Heats Up

first_imgThe Venable Consortium, a group of media industry associations lead by AAAA, IAB, ANA, DMA and backed by counsel providers Venable LLP, recently took a significant, proactive step in the release of its “Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising.” The publication is important because it’s a direct response to a growing call for stricter control over the tracking of consumer behavior online.Up to now, publisher and advertiser trade groups were primarily concerned with keeping the FTC on the side of self-regulation, which it largely has been. Lately, however, lawmakers have become more vocal about introducing legislation that threatens the industry’s self-regulatory status.Congressman Rick Boucher, a Virginia Democrat and chairman of the Communications, Technology and the Internet subcommittee, has made clear his intention to introduce legislation to bolster consumer privacy protection. “I have previously announced my desire to work with Chairman Waxman, Chairman Rush and Ranking Members Barton, Stearns and Radanovich to develop legislation this year extending to Internet users the assurance that their online experience is more secure,” he said in his opening statement during a joint hearing on behavioral advertising with the Communications and Consumer Protection Subcommittees last June.A Shift Away From Self-Regulation? Currently, the Internet publishing and advertising industry is operating in a self-regulated environment, but online behavioral tracking is being used to ever-growing degrees—from large ad networks of unaffiliated sites to specific vertical networks and down to single-publisher Web site networks and “related content” applications. “Part of what we’re doing with that cookie is enhancing the consumer experience,” says Pam Horan, president of the Online Publishers Association, which, along with the MPA and ABM is part of the Venable Consortium. “It’s to make sure we’re delivering the right content. The advertising piece of it is very important, but so is educating the lawmakers on the fact that the technology is also used for a better user experience.”Congressman Boucher would like to see an opt-out practice introduced where consumers can opt out of first- and third-party use of their information—and then be able to opt in to third-party use.“If you had a first-party opt out, that would be a publisher-consumer relationship,” says Horan. “In that scenario, that Web site would need to provide the consumer with an option.”Introducing that option, goes the argument, could severely undermine an advertising business model that, says Horan, supports 90 percent of online revenues. “At the most extreme, a requirement for opt in could have a huge impact on the business model. Our ability to serve ads is the foundation of our ability to serve that model. It could have a significant impact.”Currently, consumers can opt out via Web sites such as NetworkAdvertising.org. The FTC, for starters, would like to see something more comprehensive. The “Self-Regulatory Principles” guidelines will attempt to take that further by educating consumers via more industry-developed Web sites and marketing campaigns, as well as “new links and disclosures on the Web page or advertisement where online behavioral advertising occurs.”The guidelines are the first step in bringing the advertising and content industries together on a defined set of principles. Next, says Horan, is a set of guidelines for the enforcement of those principles. All of this, she says, is aimed at proving to the FTC and the Hill that the industry is serious about protecting its self-regulation. SIDEBARWhat You Need to KnowRuth Day, chief privacy officer at UBM [pictured], notes the privacy principles published by the Venable group focus on unaffiliated, third-party ad networks. Publishers are considered first-party trackers, and the FTC is clear on that distinction and has essentially backed off any further privacy regulation of first-party tracking of consumers due to the clear, direct relationship. However, many publishers do display third-party online behavioral ads on their sites. For those of you, here’s what Day recommends you keep an eye on.Read the Guidelines—If you work with a third-party ad server, familiarize yourself with the principles to see what they mean for ads that are displayed on your site.Know Who You’re Dealing With—“Publishers need to know whether a third-party ad server displaying ads on its Web sites is part of a behavioral online network, with an appropriate representation in the contract or insertion order,” says Day.Who’s Responsible for What?—“Logically, the third-party ad server needs to be the party responsible for notice because it is the entity collecting information from the visitor to the publisher’s Web site,” adds Day.last_img read more

How honeybees maintain protective clumps under stressful conditions

first_imgCredit: CC0 Public Domain Once a year, honeybees, led by a queen, leave their nests in droves to find a new home. But because it takes some time to find a site and build a new nest, there is a period when they have no place to live. To protect themselves during this time, they congregate into masses that hang from tree branches—these clusters are made entirely of bees, each clinging to one another. In its most natural state, such clusters tend to form in the shape of a cone. But prior research has shown that the cone shape becomes flattened during inclement weather, such as when the wind blows. In this new effort, the researchers wondered how the honeybees knew what to do when adverse conditions arose. To find out, they gathered bees from the wild and put them in a container in their lab where they were allowed to form a cluster, dangling from a movable apparatus.Once a cluster formed, the researchers moved the apparatus to pull the cluster back and forth, simulating the impact of wind pushing the branch upon which they hung. As the researchers watched, the cluster slowly flattened, hugging the apparatus. A flatter shape, the researchers noted, would reduce pressure from the wind, just as it would for a person lying on the ground versus standing up. By studying slow-motion video of the bees and tracking the movement of those on the surface of the cluster, the researchers developed a theory—they believed that the bees, upon feeling pulled from the bees they were holding on to, moved themselves to a place of higher stress. To test this theory, the group created a computer simulation of the honeybees and their cluster and then gave those on the outer surface the ability to feel stress and to react to it by moving to a position of higher stress. They found the virtual bees changed the shape of their cluster in the same way as did those in the real one, offering strong evidence that their theory was correct. Inside the brains of killer bees Explore further A team of researchers at Harvard University has discovered the means by which honeybees keep their temporary clumps intact during adverse weather conditions. In their paper published in the journal Nature Physics, the group describes their study of honeybee behavior in their lab and what the found.
