BtoB Brand Tech Decisions Goes Digital Only

first_imgSummit Professional Networks announced a shift to digital for its quarterly magazine, Tech Decisions, toward the end of the first quarter in 2014. Tech Decisions, currently operating via PropertyCasualty360.com, will continue to be housed there as a web-based magazine with plans for a tablet magazine. In addition, Summit Professional Networks will offer an expanded digital portfolio including custom content creation for its partners, webcasts and face-to-face events.“The relevance to the tech audience is to see the information in their domain,” says Gary Mirkin, senior vice president of the Custom Solutions Group at  Summit Professional Networks. “We made the decision [to go digital] because the distribution is solid and that it is being sought after by our audience through our tech channels.”In 2013, Tech Decisions magazine produced four regular issues, one special edition and a weekly e-newsletter called “Tech Digest Weekly” to a roughly 24,000-person circulation of mostly c-level executives, IT managers and larger mid-market agents in the insurance industry. “We see the potential to increase [our audience] by virtue of broadening the editorial focus of the digital publication [and] the ability to reach the other segments that Summit Professional Networks focuses on—financial, insurance, legal and subsets of those,” Mirkin contends. “In essence, the strategy should take the circulation much higher.”As part of the new strategy’s digital format, Summit plans to leverage its presence in the financial services, benefits and legal markets by adding “strategic thought-leader programs” to its portfolio including webcast, video, live event and whitepaper components, acting as a “channel -support tool generator” to help its partners disseminate information to their clients, according to Mirkin.“Digital obviously offers a much broader audience a platform that they’re used to using now rather than a platform that is clearly somewhat cumbersome for people to get to,” he says.  “They should get the information in the platform they’re used to and that they want to, so that it becomes more of a tool for them. It’s kind of the way of the world in this particular [audience] segment.”However, Mirkin does not disregard the appeal of print or its market demand. He adds that if a sponsor showed “great interest and would like print issues for their channel, sales force or their tradeshow,” the company would consider accommodating the request.last_img read more

IUC Trai opposes urgent relief for Idea Airtel over IUC

first_imgA rickshaw puller speaks on his mobile phone as he waits for customers in front of advertisement billboards belonging to telecom companies in Kolkata February 3, 2014.REUTERS/Rupak De ChowdhuriTelecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday said that there is no need for urgent relief to Idea and Bharti Airtel, claiming that Trai’s decision to slash IUC rate from 14 paise to 6 paise will not have immediate impact on companies, the Business Standard (BS) reported.”There will be no immediate impact on companies due to IUC,” Trai told the court, BS reported.Reliance Jio, which is expected to benefit from the IUC rate cut, hit back at other telecom firms, and was quoted by BS as saying, “Airtel, Vodafone, Idea’s plea is worst form of ‘forum shopping’. They’ve recovered IUC costs.”Airtel, Vodafone and Idea have been net gainers under the current IUC system since they have more than 60 percent of the subscriber base and more calls terminating on their networks than originating from them. Jio, which offers free voice services, has the most outgoing calls terminating on the networks of others.Trai notified the latest reduction on September 19, prompting accusations of lack of transparency and bias by Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, which want IUC to be doubled. The regulator, on its part, took pre-emptive action last week and filed caveats in 18 high courts across the country asking to be heard before any order is issued.Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular had moved the Bombay High Court on Thursday seeking a stay on the telecom regulator’s decision to cut the IUC from next month, marking the start of another legal confrontation between telcos and the sector watchdog. The two telcos had asked the court to halt the implementation of Trai’s decision to reduce IUC to 6 paise a minute from 14 paise from October 1, and subsequently, scrap the charge from January 2020. IUC is paid to networks that receive calls. An Economic Times (ET) report said on Friday that the stakes are higher this time as telecom companies, including Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular stand to lose a combined Rs 5,000 crore in revenue annually, while Reliance Jio Infocomm, which started services a year ago, could gain about Rs 5,000 crore.last_img read more

NCLT to hear petition against Reliance Naval Jindal India Thermal

first_imgInsolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC)The state-run IDBI bank has filed a petition against Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd in the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for defaulting on debt worth more than Rs 1,250 crore. Reliance Naval is part of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group conglomerate and has a licence and contract to build warships.Mint reported that the IDBI bank has requested the Ahmedabad bench of NCTL to initiate a resolution process against the company. As of March 2018, the total debt owned by the Reliance Naval to its lenders is worth Rs 5349.17 crores. In its petition the IDBI bank said that “As per the valuation report of March 2018, the company’s net market value stood at Rs 1,880 crore while its fair market value by another valuer was around Rs 1,535 crore as on May 21,” IDBI said in its petition. The managing partner of law firm MDP and Partners, Nishit Dhruva who is representing the IBDI bank confirmed the development but declined to share further details. The Congress Party had recently raised questions against the Reliance defence’s involvement in the Rafale deal. The party questioned the selection of a company which is reeling under high debt for the multi-crore deal with the French government.Similarly, the State Bank of India (SBI) has taken Jindal India Thermal Power project in Odisha to the NCTL insolvency proceedings as a process of stake sale failed. Last week, the 180-day deadline to find a resolution ended without anything concrete. The project landed in a trouble after the Supreme Court ordered the cancellation of the coal block and recently operating at below optimum level. The total amount of loan held by owned by the Jindal India Thermal Power to a consortium of 17 lenders, led by SBI is around Rs 57.7 billion. Out of the total amount the SBI’s exposure is Rs 14 billion. The SBI is yet to take a decision on the bench where it would be filing the case. Notably, the SBI had announced expression of interest for selling 51 percent stake in the company to recover its debt but the SBI was forced to take the process to the NCLT following muted response.last_img read more

In new talks US and N Korea to face old disagreements

first_imgThis picture taken on 30 June 2019 and released by North Korea`s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on 1 July 2019 shows North Korea`s leader Kim Jong Un (L) shaking hands with US President Donald Trump at the Military Demarcation Line that divides North and South Korea, in the Joint Security Area (JSA) of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized zone (DMZ). Photo: AFPWhen nuclear talks resume after Sunday’s off-the-cuff meeting between US president Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the inter-Korean border, negotiators will be revisiting old disagreements that have scuttled previous talks.Trump and Kim agreed to set up teams to hold working-level talks, which have stalled since a second summit in February in Vietnamese capital Hanoi failed to agree on US calls for denuclearisation and North Korean demands for sanctions relief. The brief weekend meeting broke a recent pattern of increasing threats and complaints from North Korea, and the two sides will enter the talks with renewed backing from their leaders.North Korea’s state media KCNA lauded Sunday’s meeting, saying Kim and Trump vowed to continue dialogue to make a “new breakthrough” in the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and in bilateral ties. But there are still formidable differences, including whether denuclearisation or normalising ties should come first, and how much North Korea is actually willing to give up.Disagreements ExposedIn Hanoi, Trump sought the abolition of all of the North’s nuclear installations, including shipping of the weapons and material to the United States, while Kim offered to close its main Yongbyon nuclear complex in return for sanctions relief. There has been little sign that North Korea and the United States are any closer to resolving differences on how to achieve denuclearisation and when and which sanctions should be lifted.Perhaps most fundamentally, the sides lack a shared definition of denuclearisation, with Pyongyang discussing it in terms of removing the threat of nuclear weapons from the entire Korean peninsula. Some experts have said Trump made a mistake at his first summit with Kim in Singapore last year by allowing their promise to build “new relations” a top priority in their joint statement, whereas denuclearisation comes in third. The New York Times, citing unidentified sources, reported on Monday that Washington is seeking to soften its approach, floating an idea of accepting a nuclear freeze – instead of complete dismantlement – and giving tacit recognition that North Korea is a nuclear state.Reuters was unable to independently verify the report.Nuclear Site ProposalOne of the most visible parts of North Korea’s nuclear programme, the Yongbyon reactor complex is a central point of contention. After the Hanoi summit ended without a deal, North Korean foreign ministry officials said they had made a “historically unprecedented offer” to close all of Yongbyon together with US experts.US negotiators confirmed North Korea had made the offer, but said talks broke down over exactly which facilities were included, and the scope of sanctions relief that Pyongyang demanded in return.Even if the revived working level talks lead to Yongbyon’s closure, the process is likely to take years, well after Trump’s term ends.South Korean officials say that dismantling the site would be a major blow to North Korea’s nuclear programme, though experts warn that Pyongyang has built a wide number of other, clandestine sites that could allow it to keep some nuclear capabilities.New North Korean NegotiatorsUS Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said a fresh round of talks will likely happen in mid-July, which would be led by Stephen Biegun, special envoy for North Korea, and Pyongyang’s foreign ministry officials, without specifying. The diplomats would take over from Kim Yong Chol, a hardline military general, who steered negotiations in the run-up to the Hanoi summit. The new North Korean lineup could mean better chances of working through denuclearisation, analysts said.Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and his deputy, Choe Son Hui, are seasoned diplomats with expertise in the nuclear issues and experience in working with US officials. The diplomats have gained trust from Kim since the failed summit, but the final decision maker remains Kim Jong Un, who has shunned gruelling working-level talks in favour of dealing directly with Trump. What Does North Korea Want?North Korea has publicly called for an end to the crippling economic sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Nations. An initial step might include formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War and setting up liaison offices.North Korea has also long called for a peace deal with the United States to normalise relations and end the technical state of war that has existed since the 1950-53 Korean War concluded with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.South Korea has also said re-opening the Kaesong industrial park and tours to Mount Kumgang, two inter-Korean projects closed as tensions ramped up, could expedite the North’s denuclearisation.last_img

University research team creates augmented reality sandbox w Video

first_img More information: Project page idav.ucdavis.edu/~okreylos/ResDev/SARndbox/ What’s even cooler is the fact that the software used to create the simulations is all available under a GNU public license agreement, which means most any school, museum or other teaching program could build a similar system at very little cost. With such a system, students can gain a deeper understanding of how land and water systems interact and see for themselves how changes to topography over time cause changes in the environment in a much more hands-on fashion than when building static models out of sand, dirt or clay. Pico projector used in eye based video gaming system Explore further © 2012 Phys.Org (Phys.org) — Most children at some point in their schooling are taught about the water table and many wind up being tasked with creating a model of some sort to represent how it all works. Some use clay, but many more likely use sand, as it’s far easier and faster than most anything else. Now researchers at UC Davis have taken that model to new extremes by building a sandbox system that is capable of automatically adding augmented reality real-time coloring to the sand to indicate altitude and moving water as changes are made to the terrain with a hand or small tool.center_img Citation: University research team creates augmented reality sandbox (w/ Video) (2012, May 11) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-05-university-team-augmented-reality-sandbox.html The project is part of the University’s Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (funded by a National Science Foundation grant) and was started as a means of building an educational system for children to help kids better visualize how land and water systems work. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. To make the sandbox, the team combined a Kinect 3D camera, a digital projector and simulation software running on a computer and of course, an ordinary sandbox raised up on four legs for optimal viewing. The system works by first collecting images of the sandbox from above using the Kinect camera, at thirty frames per second, as a demonstrator (or student) changes the landscape below in the sandbox. Information from the camera is fed to a computer running the simulation software (Vrui VR development toolkit). The software generates different colors to represent different elevation levels in a virtual topological map. It also uses a set of Saint-Venant shallow water equations to create realistic looking water movement. Both are then projected down onto the sandbox in real time, giving the appearance of reacting to changes made by a person creating hills, valleys, rivers, streams and lakes in the sand. The result is nearly instant color coding of elevation topography and the instigation of virtual water into the modeled waterways.last_img read more

ABI stability may finally come in Swift 50

first_imgVersion 5 of Apple’s Swift language, used for iOS and MacOS application development, will release early next year. The main focus of this release will be an ABI (application binary interface) stability in the standard Swift library, in addition to Standard Library Improvements, Foundation Improvements and Syntactic Additions. ABI (application binary interface) features in Swift 5.0 ABI defines how to call a function, how data is represented in memory, where metadata is and how to access it. The current version of Swift is not ABI stable, so every binary (App), bundles its own version of the Swift Dynamic Library. For instance, if App1 is using Swift 3.0, it bundles Swift 3.0 Dynamic Library (containing the 3.0 ABI) inside. And if App2 is using Swift 3.2, it bundles Swift 3.2 and it’s 3.2 ABI. Here Swift doesn’t live on the iOS Operating System, it lives within each App. The ABI in Swift 5.0 will enable future compiler versions to produce binaries that conform to the stable ABI. A stable ABI tends to persist for the rest of the platform’s lifetime due to ever-increasing mutual dependencies. If Swift becomes ABI Stable, its ABI will be compatible with every version of Swift. For example, if App1 is using Swift 5.0, but App2 is using Swift 5.3, both will be consuming the Swift ABI embedded in the Operating System. The ABI feature was originally intended for Swift 4 release. Carryover goals from Swift 4 that are required for implementing the ABI in Swift 5 include: Generics features for the standard library. This includes conditional conformances for generic types and recursive protocol types and lifting restrictions on associated types in protocols API resilience, which will allow public APIs for a library to evolve A memory ownership model Besides ABI stability, expect these improvements in Swift 5: #1 String ergonomics Processing of the string type is expected to get better as users will have the ability to create raw strings, distinguish between enums that are fixed and enums that might change in the future,  and check whether one number is a multiple of another by using isMultiple(of:) #2 Groundwork for a new concurrency model Swift 5 will focus on designing language capabilities for building and using asynchronous APIs and dealing with problems created by callback-heavy code. #3 Targeted improvements to the Foundation API The Cocoa SDK- which was originally designed for Objective-C, can work seamlessly with Swift. To try out Swift 5.0 ahead of its release early next year, download the latest Swift trunk development snapshot, activate it inside your current Xcode version,  and then head over to Xcode Playground for examples you can edit. I am really fed up with the paltry 17 increase i

first_imgI am really fed up with the paltry 1.7% increase in Social Security this year. How can that number be right when Medicare premiums were increased by almost three times as much? Sure, if Medicare premiums were the only thing going up, maybe that wouldn’t be so bad. But it seems like inflation is picking up far quicker than the official, government-reported numbers. I recently saw a photo of Congress with the caption, “Are you sure you want to move these 535 items to the recycle bin?” After looking at several surveys on Congressional approval ratings, I would say part of the problem is that too many are recycled. About 535 items should be dumped in the trash. Unfortunately, that’s not a realistic option. However, we can attack the sunny illusion and look at things as they really are. I am going to ask our readers for help this week in determining the true inflation rate you’re experiencing in daily life. The best way to find out what the real inflation number is ask our readers. Hopefully you will find it a bit fun, but it’s really an important first step toward looking at reality and taking charge of your financial future. Please take a moment after you’ve finished reading to complete our anonymous, one-question survey. What the Heck Is Inflation Anyway? One of my adult children recently asked me to define the word “inflation.” I went to my online dictionary, and here is what I found: in•fla•tion [ in fláysh’n ] Higher prices: an increase in the supply of currency or credit relative to the availability of goods and services, resulting in higher prices and a decrease in the purchasing power of money. OK, but what does that really mean? Well, if you’re working, hopefully your wages are keeping up with inflation so you’re not becoming poorer with each passing day. If you’re retired and no longer working, your overall portfolio must increase at a rate higher than the rate of inflation, or you are getting poorer each year. Imagine that you’d stuffed $1 million under a large mattress at the beginning of the year. Now, imagine that you lose 10% of your purchasing power. At the end of the year, that million would buy $100,000 less than it would have the previous year. The average American is having a tough time grasping just what is happening. Edward N. Wolff of New York University just released a study concluding that: “The median net worth of American households has dropped to a 43-year low as the lower and middle classes appear poorer and less stable than they have been since 1969.” We reached a similar conclusion on the effects of inflation on Social Security recipients in our recent article, Paul Revere, the Fearmonger. Hopefully both retirees and folks in the workforce are seeing their incomes go up. However, if inflation is rising at a faster rate, their buying power is going down. Increased income that creates the illusion of wealth can confuse a lot of us.What Is the Real Inflation Rate? OK, you’ve got the idea. So what is the true inflation rate and how does it affect you? The answer is, of course, “that depends.” Since the Federal Reserve was created in 1913, the value of the dollar – according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) – has declined by 95%. If $1.00 would buy 20 loaves of bread then, it would buy one loaf today. According to John Williams’ Shadow Government Statistics, if you calculate inflation the way the government did in 1980, the current inflation rate is 10%. If you calculate it the way the government did in 1990, it’s about 5.5%. And finally, ask any Social Security recipient what their cost of living adjustment was for this year’s check. It was 1.7% across the board. So take your pick, anywhere between the current government-reported 1.7% and the Shadow Government Statistics’ alternatives. Whatever the real number is, we know one thing for sure: Inflation is a way of life in America, and it erodes our true wealth. It is particularly devastating for seniors and savers who aren’t receiving regular wage increases. Why does the government continually manipulate the Consumer Price Index (CPI) numbers in its favor? Basically it is a hidden savings tax. It benefits borrowers by allowing them to pay back debts with much cheaper dollars. And who is the biggest borrower in the world? Why, the US government, of course. If you’d like to read more about the government’s incentives to manipulate the data in its favor, take another look at Paul Revere, the Fearmonger. So how can baby boomers and retirees fight back? During the Carter administration we experienced high inflation, but CDs and top-quality bonds also provided large interest income, allowing retirees to protect their buying power. Those options are not available today.Dennis Miller, “Restaurant Detective” How much do we really need to earn after taxes to maintain our wealth? First, let’s agree on the true rate of inflation, the true increase in the cost of living for Money Forever readers over the last year. It’s not an easy figure to pin down. For example, my favorite ice cream still costs the same, but the container is smaller. Sure, the grocery clerk adds the same amount to my bill, but my cost per spoonful has increased. That’s why I went back to our credit-card receipts to hunt down the facts. We frequent several local restaurants. (No, I do not get any compensation for mentioning them.) Let’s start with our local Bob Evans. Our bills for the last quarter of 2011 and 2012 were within a dime of each other. But this turned out to be a another example of hidden inflation, just like my ice cream. After my doctor and I had a “little talk,” I decided to get serious about dieting. Now we only order the “over 55” specials – you know, the ones on the back page of the menu. Yes, they are cheaper, but there’s also less food. The standard meatloaf dinner comes with two pieces of meatloaf; the senior special has only one. While we are spending the same amount, believe me, our portions are a lot smaller! Our local Hooters restaurant offers peel-and-eat shrimp sold by the pound. How much has our average bill increased? The answer is: 25.59%. A large portion of that is probably from increased labor costs, but that doesn’t really matter. I’m still paying more – a lot more! In most of the restaurants we frequent, Diet Coke and iced tea have gone up a quarter or more, which is also a double-digit price increase. As a friend mentioned recently, “Inexpensive dinners are getting more expensive.” I asked Vedran Vuk, our senior research analyst, to compare a few grocery staples, showing how much their prices have increased since 2006. The graph below shows what you likely already know to be true. We received quite a bit of feedback after publishing Paul Revere, the Fearmonger, but no one disagreed with the idea that our government is not telling the truth. Perhaps BLS, the acronym for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, should be shortened to “BS.” There may be some debate as to what the true inflation figure is, but no one believed it was 1.7%Time to Put In Your Two Cents Enough already with the government’s phony numbers! I’d like to hear from you – all of our readers in the retirement trenches. Then we can use that figure to better understand the investment challenges we face. Please take a moment to complete our anonymous, one-question survey, and check back next week for the results. There’s also a place to leave comments or share your own inflation experiences. If you really have a lot on your mind, please drop me an email. We have all worked hard for our money, making a lot of sacrifices as we built up our nest eggs. I dislike the idea of any government inflating its currency to avoid doing what we all have to do: not spend more than we make. What really frustrates me is the sneakiness, trying to hide the truth from the very public that keeps them in power. This is not a Democrat/Republican issue; politicians on both sides of the aisle are guilty. Inflation is like carbon monoxide to seniors and savers. If the alarm doesn’t go off in time, we’ll be in real trouble. We want to keep you informed and help you confront the investment challenges head-on. We can all make our nest eggs last and hopefully leave some for the next generation, but first we have to see the monster for what it is. Stay tuned…On the Lighter Side I read an article last week on how retirement savings accounts are drawing the attention of the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The article points out that Americans hold $19.4 trillion in retirement assets. The author wrote: “The bureau’s core concern is that many Americans, notably those from the retiring Baby Boom generation, may fall prey to financial scams, according to three people briefed on the CFPB’s deliberations who asked not to be named because the matter is still under discussion.” When I read articles that suggest the government needs to protect us from scams, etc. by requiring we invest a portion of our retirement savings with the government itself, it really infuriates me. Isn’t the government running its own scam by tweaking inflation statistics? The government needs to keep their paws out of our retirement money.  They will get it soon enough through estate taxes. This kind of thing drives me nuts! —- Congratulations to the 49ers and the Ravens who are playing in the Super Bowl. How cool is it that two brothers are the head coaches of opposing teams in the biggest game of the year? Their father was also a successful football coach; I cannot imagine just how proud their entire family must be. Why do I suspect that both brothers are quite familiar with each other’s trick plays? And finally… Many thanks to our dear friend Toots who keeps us supplied with cool things to lighten the mood. Here are some she titled “Punography.” What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary? A thesaurus. On a class trip to the Coca-Cola factory: I hope there’s no pop quiz. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me! All the toilets in New York’s police stations have been stolen. Police have nothing to go on. And my favorite… I used to think I was indecisive. Now I’m not so sure. Until next week…last_img read more

Scratch another Guinea worm hot spot off the list

first_imgScratch another Guinea worm hot spot off the list. One of the countries hardest hit with the parasite — South Sudan — has finally stopped transmission, the Carter Center announced Wednesday. The country reported zero cases in 2017 and hasn’t had a case in 15 months. There are also no signs Guinea worm is circulating in dogs in South Sudan, as it is in Chad and Mali.”I come from an area that had the most Guinea worm,” South Sudan’s Minister of Health, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, said at a news conference. “I never thought — even one time — that the area would be free of Guinea worm, let alone all of South Sudan would be.””But today that dream has come true,” he added. The international effort to eradicate Guinea worm has been a huge success. Back in the mid-’80s, more than 3 million people were catching the parasite each year. Now Guinea worm is circulating in only three countries: Ethiopia, Mali and Chad. Last year, there were only 30 human cases worldwide. But to eradicate the worm, health workers also have to stop transmission in animals. Last year, there were nearly a thousand cases in dogs and cats in Chad and Mali.Guinea worm is a horrific infection. First, a painful blister starts to form on the skin. Then a thin, white worm — up to 3 feet long — emerges from the blister over the course of a few weeks. It is an incredibly painful process and temporarily handicaps a person while he or she waits for the worm to come out of the skin.People catch Guinea worm by drinking contaminated water. Simply filtering drinking water can stop transmission of the parasite. An infected person can also stop the spread of the parasite by keeping the emerging worm away from water. When the worm touches water, it releases tens of thousands of baby worms and contaminates the whole body of water.Back in 2006, South Sudan reported more than 20,000 cases, making it the third hardest hit country in the world. Only Nigeria and Uganda had reported higher annual cases, at about 650,000 and 126,000, respectively.”This an incredible story, given all of the challenges that South Sudan has faced, especially the ongoing conflict,” says Dr. Sharon Roy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who leads an international team working on Guinea worm eradication.Former President Jimmy Carter has led a massive campaign to eradicate the worm. “I’d like for the last Guinea worm to die before I do,” he told reporters.Sudan was especially challenging. Civil war has plagued the region since the 1960s. To begin the eradication program in the area, Carter had to negotiate a special “Guinea worm cease-fire” back in 1995. And just a few years ago, the Carter Center had to evacuate its staff from the country because of violence.”If South Sudan can stop Guinea worm, Chad can do it. Mali can do it. Ethiopia can do it, too,” Roy says. “It’s really an amazing accomplishment.” Copyright 2018 NPR. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/.last_img read more

Very Unattractive People Earn Significantly More Money Study Says

first_img April 23, 2018 This story originally appeared on Business Insider Writer Entrepreneurs Add to Queue –shares Next Article Image credit: Halay Alex/Shutterstock via BI Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Businesscenter_img Lindsay Dodgson 2 min read Very Unattractive People Earn Significantly More Money, Study Says It’s no secret that life can be easier for beautiful people. Studies have shown being good-looking has benefits for your health, intelligence and helps with making friends.Being physically attractive can also literally pay off, as many people believe it can mean you make more money. In short, beautiful people are more confident, have more social skills and are seen as more able by employers, which translates to higher wages. However, a recent study, published in the Journal of Business and Psychology, has found there is a caveat to this “beauty premium.”Satoshi Kanazawa from the London School of Economics and Political Science and Mary Still from the University of Massachusetts in Boston analysed data from a study of 20,000 young Americans. They were interviewed and measured on physical attractiveness at age 16 then three more times until they were 29.The findings showed that the theory there is a “ugliness penalty” on wages isn’t that simple. When other traits were taken into account, such as health and intelligence, results showed people who were more conscientious, extroverted and less neurotic earned significantly more than others. Also, participants who were labeled as “very unattractive” always earned more than those who were just “unattractive.” This was also sometimes the case when very unattractive people were compared to those who were average-looking and attractive.Alex Fradera offers an explanation for this in BPS Digest. He said the personality trait “Openness to Experience” may have been surprisingly correlated with lower earnings and higher attractiveness in this particular data set, when it is usually associated with higher pay.”Could this Openness-attractiveness association be an indicator that some of the very unattractive scored especially low on Openness, and were perhaps highly devoted to a specific topic area, pursuing it obsessively to the exclusion of all distractions and eventually entering the forefront of their field?” he wrote. “We know that Openness correlates negatively with the passion component of ‘Grit,’ so such effects are conceivable.”Still said the methods of previous studies may not have accounted for the really ugly people because the “very unattractive” and “unattractive” are often lumped in together in one group.”Thereby they fail to document the ugliness premium enjoyed by the very unattractive workers,” she said. You can already find 400Kbps-to-700Kbps service in more than 200 metro areas, with 100Kbps–plus speeds pretty much everywhere in between. Bandwidth will increase and prices will fall next year as Mobile WiMAX (802.16e) and other multi-megabit-per-second networks like Flash/OFDM come into their own.Your telecomputing gear won’t need to change much. At most, you may want laptop, phone or printer/fax/copier versions that fit your car’s ergonomics and connectivity options–or maybe accessories that make it easier to dock and undock your tools as you dash in and out of your mobile office. The other necessary piece of equipment is a short-range wireless network in and around your car.You may soon see more Wi-Fi/3G router combinations. But fully half of all automobile brands are already building 1Mbps Bluetooth connectivity into at least some of their models, says Phil Magney, co-founder and principal analyst of Telematics Research Group, a research and data firm in Minneapolis. Carmakers have long design cycles, and Bluetooth was settled on before the arrival of 480Mbps Wireless USB. But Bluetooth is fast enough to connect digital entertainment systems to widely available Bluetooth-enabled phones and computers, says Magney.New models let you voice-dial a docked cell phone or choose a number from an automatically synced contact list in your car’s entertainment system. Incoming calls automatically mute music on the radio and can be answered using a steering wheel button. In-dash information displays are designed for safe access to in-vehicle communications and navigation systems. At some point, maps, directions and various menu options could be transparent images on your windshield. GPS-based navigation is on its way to becoming standard automobile equipment, says Magney, as are satellite radio and connections to iPods and other MP3 players.By the way, if you’re driving a late-model car, you’re already piloting a computer on wheels that electronically controls braking, steering and other major systems. Digital entertainment systems are adding DVDs, LCDs, and magnetic and flash drives to the cabin. This time next year, says Magney, we’ll see car-top antenna packages with various combinations of “cellular, GPS, Wi-Fi and WiMAX-you name it.”We really don’t have that far to travel before your car will be outfitted just about as well as your office or home. Keep your business rolling by making your car an office on wheels. Road Requirements In the Carport Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Magazine Contributor Does it feel like you spend more time in your car than in your office? You’re not alone–even if you don’t carpool. A recent wide-ranging study by The Dieringer Research Group revealed that almost 21 million Americans work in their automobiles. It’s not really surprising when you consider how many of America’s 135 million workers have outbound jobs–salespeople, client-services providers and entrepreneurs in particular. Work pressures being what they are, we’ve long turned on everything from cell phones to laptops to get a little jump on work outside work. We download e-mail, spruce up presentations and, of course, make lots of client calls while we’re gridlocked.ITAC, the Telework Advisory Group for WorldatWork, calls this “embracing telework”–the new way to describe our decades-old love affair with telecommuting. Not only are a third of us working at home these days, but we’re also “mobile working” in planes, trains and automobiles. More than 15 million of us can even be found working at parks and other recreational sites from time to time, according to ITAC, whose web address pretty much says it all: www.workingfromanywhere.org .Whether the prospect of more places to work makes you glad or sad, the direction is clear. The continuous stream of laptops, cell phones and all things portable has left us pretty well outfitted. The only thing missing is a place to plug them in–and I’m not talking about an AC power outlet. Most new cars are equipped with outlets for electronics, and there are plenty of aftermarket add-ons (see ” Road Requirements “). The thing that will take mobile working to the next level is a broadband internet onramp–and a wireless one is just around the corner.Consider the workstyle of 50-year-old yacht broker Berny Coffey, founder of WME Yachts Ltd. in Alexandria Bay, New York. Coffey’s office is wherever he parks his car–and it needs to be, because business keeps him traveling to marinas and boat shows six months a year. Coffey actively manages a network of 35 brokers around the world, with annual sales of almost $50 million.Besides the usual telecomputing quiver, Coffey’s key piece of equipment is a WavBoard wireless router from Omniwav Mobile. Easily mounted in a glove compartment or trunk, WavBoard connects Coffey to Verizon Wireless’ EV-DO network at 400Kbps or better, and it connects his laptop and printer/copier to the internet over Wi-Fi.Coffey carries the portable WavBoard into boat shows and marinas, where he often gives prospective buyers continents away a live videocam tour of a yacht while chatting over Skype’s toll-free phone service.”I was in Florida when Hurricane Wilma hit,” recounts Coffey, “and my brokers couldn’t tell we were without electricity or phones for seven days because I never missed a beat. If my cell phone wouldn’t work somewhere, VoIP would.” OmniWav Mobile WavBoard:Cellular/Wi-Fi router downloads at 144Kbps to 700Kbps or faster over Verizon’s EV-DO/1xRTT network.
