Amazon granted patent for surveillance drones service

first_imgA new patent shows how drones can keep an eye out on a home while making deliveries.  CNET For years, Amazon has shown off how it’ll use drones to deliver items to customers, and it’s even developed a super-quiet drone for neighborhood deliveries. The company has a new patent that’ll give these flying robots a second use: surveillance. Amazon received a patent for what it calls “Image creation using geo-fence data” from the US Patent and Trademark Office in early June. The application explains that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, could be used to provide a secondary service of checking on an individual’s property while the robots are out doing deliveries.Surveillance drones patent figureAn image from the Amazon patent shows how drones will deliver and provide surveillance. US Patent and Trademark Office/Amazon As part of this service, customers can receive images or videos from the drones overlooking the property. UAVs would only be allowed to record the property of the individuals who consented and not those of their neighbors. “We take customer privacy very seriously,” John Tagle, senior PR manager for Amazon, said in an email Friday. “Some reports have suggested that this technology would spy or gather data on homes without authorization — to be clear, that’s not what the patent says. The patent clearly states that it would be an opt-in service available to customers who authorize monitoring of their home.”One company you might think would be worried about this is Sunflower Labs, a startup developing home security drones. But Chief Executive Alex Pachikov says he’s happy with Amazon’s patent.”I am actually very excited to see this,” Pachikov said. “We’ve long believed that drones are ideally suited for security, and while Amazon’s approach is different from ours, we are happy to see this market validated.”Like many patents granted to tech companies, there’s no telling if this drone security service will actually see the light of day. So far, Amazon’s plans for drones and autonomous vehicles are for deliveries sometime in the future. CNET reporter Stephen Shankland contributed to this report.Originally published June 21, 7:50 a.m. PT.Update, 9:16 a.m. PT: Adds Amazon comment. Update, June 23: Adds comment from Sunflower Labs. JAIVEERRAJ SINGH GOHIL The Prince Of Iron

first_imgWith their penchant for sweet treats and sneaking in sugar into every meal, Gujaratis have made Gujarat infamous for obesity and malnutrition. Both these dietary disorders though seemingly complete opposites are two sides of the same coin. To take on the onus of changing this and transforming the state of Gujarat into the fittest in the country is a challenging endeavour. In the modern day city of Bhavnagar in Gujarat is a young man who is inspiring a new generation of Gujaratis to get fitter. Jaiveerraj Singh Gohil is the prince of the erstwhile royal family of Bhavnagar. His great-grandfather Maharaja Krishnakumar Sinhji Gohil was the first Indian ruler to merge his kingdom with the Indian union in 1948. Born into this lap of history, Jaiveer- or Yuvraj Bhavnagar as he is known to many, is zealous to find a way to emulate the beneficence of his forefathers. A quick look through his Instagram profile- @yuvrajbhavnagar will show pictures with various dignitaries all with his signature flex pose. The mammoth following he has gathered is the cherry on this healthy cake! The young prince studied at Jamnabai Narsee and Ecole Mondiale School in Mumbai, going on to complete his graduation from the esteemed Les Roches Switzerland where he pursued a degree in hospitality. He returned to his ancestral home in Bhavnagar where the family runs a heritage hotel- Nilambag Palace Hotel. Besides this they also have Narayani Heritage which is a budget hotel, Gopnath Bungalow, a seaside retreat and a Health Club. The Health Club is where Gohil’s passion thrived.Jaiveer’s interest in health and fitness got him involved in the burgeoning fitness industry in India. He was the first Indian brand ambassador for international body builder Kai Greene’s company Dynamik Muscle. The Gujarat State Bodybuilding Federation- a body recognised by the Government of India, named him as their President. Gohil himself conducts state level competitions that have given a platform to several local bodybuilders, promoting an activity that has little recognition in the country. The unique fitness methods adopted by Gohil combine old-school akhada training with compound lifts. He has created a special training program for the Bhavnagar City Police Department which he personally oversees. To achieve his aim of transforming Gujarat into India’s fittest city, Gohil has many things planned, beginning with a Weekend Wellness Retreat at Nilambag Palace Hotel in Bhavnagar. His popularity with the youth has motivated them to focus more on a healthy lifestyle which in turn boost their personal confidence.Under his brand, the Yuvraj Bhavnagar Fitness Academy, Gohil focuses on body transformations with custom-made workouts and diets for each individual. YBFA also has its own line of fitness apparel and health food.Knowing full well that following a fit regime is often expensive, he is making sure that his programs are affordable for the end goal is to make not only Gujarat but India into a fit nation.IBT does not endorse any of the above content.last_img read more

Cuba president welcomes US senator Google CEO

first_imgCuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel. Photo: ReutersCuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel welcomed US republican senator Jeff Flake and Google CEO Eric Schmidt to the island country.During their meeting on Monday, Diaz-Canel and the US visitors exchanged views on the state of bilateral relations and possible areas of cooperation and “mutual interest”, reports Efe news.Flake, who has visited Cuba several times, the most recent trip being in January, is one of the main promoters in the US Congress of the rapprochement with Cuba and, in particular, of a bill that would eliminate travel restrictions to the island for US citizens.President Donald Trump’s administration has imposed new limitations on the travel of US citizens to Cuba, a country which Americans cannot visit as tourists due to Washington’s financial embargo.During their meeting, Rodriguez thanked Flake and the Google executive for their interest in contributing to the debate in favour of an improvement in bilateral relations.Google has been one of the tech giants that has been interested in moving into the Cuban telecommunications market since former US President Barack Obama launched the thaw in relations, although to date it has had only a very limited presence on the island.Three years ago, the firm offered to broaden internet access in Cuba, which is still far below average international levels, but the proposal never developed into a concrete programme.Flake and Schmidt were accompanied by US charge d’affaires in Cuba, Philip Goldberg, and Brett Perlmutter, the Google CEO’s adviser on Cuba.Cuba and the US reopened their embassies in Washington and Havana in 2015 and signed numerous cooperation accords in security, immigration, education, healthcare and culture, but Trump halted the normalisation process.last_img read more

Trumps UK visit turns to Brexit Huawei as protesters gather

first_imgPeople protest outside Buckingham Palace during the state visit of US president Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to Britain, in London, Britain on 3 June. Photo: ReutersDonald Trump will plunge into Britain’s Brexit crisis on Tuesday and is likely to demand that prime minister Theresa May’s successor ban China’s Huawei from 5G networks as thousands of protesters mock the US president across London.Feted by Queen Elizabeth and heir prince Charles on the first day of his state visit to Britain, Trump turns to politics on Tuesday with talks in Downing Street, a news conference scheduled for 1245 GMT and a dinner that could include leaders of Brexit, such as Boris Johnson, the favourite to succeed May.Trump brings demands for the United States’ closest ally in Europe, including calls by his envoys for a tougher British stance towards telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co Ltd .At a lavish banquet in Buckingham Palace, Trump praised the queen as “a great, great woman” and said the United States and United Kingdom shared an enduring alliance.”As we honour our shared victory and heritage, we affirm the common values that will unite us long into the future; freedom, sovereignty, self-determination, the rule of law and reference for the rights given to us by almighty God,” he said. The state visit, promised by May back in January 2017 when she became the first foreign leader to meet him after he took office, is cast as a chance to celebrate Britain’s “special relationship” with the United States, boost trade links and reaffirm security cooperation. But the collapse of May’s premiership over Brexit and Trump’s penchant for ignoring the conventions of modern diplomacy have made the trip one of the most unconventional state visits in recent British history. Before Air Force One even touched down on British soil, Trump praised Johnson, the former foreign secretary and leading Brexit campaigner, and advised a sharp exit from the European Union on 31 October with or without a deal.Trump also called for arch-Brexiteer Nigel Farage, a scourge of May’s ruling Conservative Party, to conduct talks with the EU.Brexit, Blimp and ChinaBrexit is the most significant geopolitical move for the United Kingdom since World War Two and if it happens, London will be more reliant on the United States as ties loosen with the other 27 members of the EU.Huawei will top talks in London after the British government appeared to defy Trump administration demands and allow the Chinese company a limited role in building 5G networks.”We’ve been clear: Our ask is that our allies and our partners and our friends don’t do anything that would endanger our shared security interests or restrict our ability to share sensitive information,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. The Trump administration has told allies not to use Huawei’s 5G technology and equipment because of fears it would allow China to spy on sensitive communications and data. Huawei denies it is, or could be, a vehicle for Chinese intelligence.Britain’s so-called special relationship with the United States is an enduring alliance, but some British voters see Trump as crude, volatile and opposed to their values on issues ranging from global warming to his treatment of women.A giant inflatable blimp depicting Trump as a pouting baby in a diaper will fly outside the British parliament in London on Tuesday ahead of what is expected to be one of the city’s largest protests against a foreign leader. In central London, tens of thousands of protesters are expected to take part in a “Carnival of Resistance” later in the day to voice their opposition to the president. Among those taking part will be environmental activists, anti-racism campaigners and women’s rights protesters. While some Britons protest, May and Trump will hold a business breakfast at St James’ Palace with US firms such as Lockheed Martin Corp, JP Morgan Chase and Co, Goldman Sachs Group Inc, construction company Bechtel and cybersecurity and data analytics firm Splunk IncMay will present Trump with a framed reproduction of the Atlantic Charter, which hung on wartime prime minister Winston Churchill’s wall and set out principles of free trade and collective security that formed the basis of the postwar peace. As part of the visit, Trump will be given a tour of the Churchill War Rooms – a labyrinthine bunker-turned-museum underneath London, and he will take part in events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, which turned the course of the war.Trump, May and their spouses will also view a ceremonial copy of the American Declaration of Independence. For lunch, they will have crab followed by beef fillet, and a meringue-based pudding known as ‘Eton mess’.While Trump and May sit down to political talks inside May’s Downing Street office, Philip May and Melania Trump will attend a garden party and take a guided tour of the building. The US first lady will receive a tea set created by designer Emma Bridgewater from the prime minister and her husband.last_img read more
